Mayor John Hamilton invites the community to attend the 2018 City of Bloomington Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Birthday Celebration. The celebration begins with a reception at 6pm, followed by the program at 7. The 7pm event will include remarks by Hamilton, members of the MLK Commission, and others. The theme is “The Man, The Movement, The Memorial” featuring keynote speaker Reverend Harold Middlebrook.
Musical performers will include the Indiana University African American Choral Ensemble, directed by Dr. Raymond Wise, and Fairview elementary students. Volunteers who participated in “A Day ON! Not A Day Off” will be recognized, and the winner of the Commission’s Legacy Award will be announced. The reception at 6pm will feature light refreshments. Both the formal program and reception are free and open to the public.

Owned by the City of Bloomington, the Buskirk-Chumley Theater is operated by BCT Management, Inc., a private non-profit organization. This theater, located one block off the Courthouse Square, seats 600 with an orchestra level and a balcony. Concessions and items purchased from BLU Boy may be taken into the auditorium. Restrooms, concessions, the box office, and the orchestra-level seats are all wheelchair accessible. Special seats are reserved for those using wheelchairs. Please contact the box office at 812.323.3020 to purchase those seats. Street, lot, and garage parking is available across downtown Bloomington.

The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Birthday Celebration Commission seeks to promote and celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s birthday and promote the acceptance of diversity in the community. The Commission sponsors events and programs to commemorate the annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. federal holiday, including a volunteer service day initiative “A Day ON! Not a Day Off”, “40 Days of Peace”, the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Legacy Award, and the annual community-wide Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Birthday Celebration. The Commission also sponsors events throughout the year which promote justice, racial harmony and equal opportunity.
