More Perfect Places
Written by Seth Bockley in collaboration with Liz Nofziger, Tanya Palmer, and Angela Tillges
More Perfect Places is an investigative theatre project inspired by the 19th century utopian history of the Southern Indiana town of New Harmony, and its evolution into a site of contemporary art and architecture in the 20th century. Combining historical research with conversations with current day Hoosiers, More Perfect Places explores the power of idealism, imagination, and rethinking the world we live in. Is another world possible? Can we make it in our communities? Whose vision(s) will guide us? How does history inform our dreams of the future?
Adaptions for the Stage of Indiana author Michael Martone’s fiction. Adapted and Directed by Jonathan Michaelsen. An Indiana native and Indiana University alumnus, Michael Martone writes fiction that examines the people of Indiana and life in the Hoosier State, while grappling with questions of place, identity, and how living in the Midwest impacts our lives. Professor Jonathan Michaelsen has adapted works by Martone into a theatrical script which sheds light on the character and humanity found in small-town Indiana.
This event is part of the IU Arts and Humanities Council’s Granfalloon Festival. It is presented in partnership with IU Theatre and Indiana Studies. Indiana Studies is part of Platform: An Arts and Humanities Research Laboratory with support from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. The performance will be followed by a book signing with Michael Martone with books available for purchase courtesy of Morgenstern’s Books.
