This year’s opening concert features the remarkable Çudamani ensemble of musicians and dancers, based in the village of Pengosekan, Bali. The district is known for its traditional arts, craft, and dance. Çudamani’s full gamelan orchestra (including metal gongs, xylophones, metallophones, drums, and bamboo flutes) accompanies dancers whose expressive, precise movements often mirror or answer the music. Performances bring to life tales of gods and heroes in Balinese myth and history. Everything about Çudamani – music, dance, highly decorated brass instruments, and the dancers’ elaborate costumes – provides a vivid look at ancient traditions. At intermission, a short film made by Jim Krause about the history of Lotus will be shown.
Artist details available at www.lotusfest.org.
Doors will open at 6:30pm for this general admission show. Prices will increase to $25 on the day of the performance. Click here to purchase advance discounted tickets for groups of 20 or more.
Following the concert, head to Lotus in the Meadow, presented by the Indiana Memorial Union. This free concert in Dunn Meadow will feature 47Soul, a Jordanian Palestinian group that translates traditional dabke rhythms (an Arabic folk dance) into a relentless, beat-driven “Shamstep,” electronic dance music with analog synth, hypnotic guitar, and powerful vocals in a mix of Arabic and English. You won’t want to miss these amazing performers.
