Photo of SingersIn May of 2020 the Bloomington Chamber Singers will perform Considering Matthew Shepard, Craig Hella Johnson’s powerful reflection on the events surrounding the 1998 death of Matthew Shepard, a gay college student in Wyoming. This “fusion oratorio” speaks with a fresh and bold voice, incorporating a variety of musical styles seamlessly woven into a unified whole. Gerald Sousa conducts the Bloomington Chamber singers and soloists in this final production of the choir’s 50th anniversary season.

Amid deep divisions in our country and fear of “otherness”, Considering Matthew Shepard helps listeners and musicians alike reflect on the proliferation of violence but also the healing power of acceptance, justice, and love. Listeners of diverse backgrounds, faiths, and musical tastes describe this work as “brilliant,” “powerful,” “innovative,” “dazzling,” and “gripping.”

More information on the piece, the Bloomington Chamber Singers, and outreach related to the concert may be found at at www.chambersingers.info.

Doors open at 7pm for this general admission event. The estimated length of the event is 2 hours.

Content warnings: This concert includes themes of violence and homophobia.

More Information

Bloomington Chamber Singers (BCS) is a community-based, nonprofit corporation owned and governed by its singers, each of whom is a voting member of the Corporation. BCS provides a rare opportunity for amateur singers to perform major choral works and to hone their craft under the guidance of a professional conductor. The excellence of the ensemble is reflected by the large number of individuals who audition each year, the group’s membership continuity, the consistently large audiences drawn from Bloomington and several surrounding counties, and the ensemble’s laudatory reviews. Over the years, BCS has increased in size, developed an effective governing infrastructure with appropriate financial resources, and, most importantly, achieved a well-recognized high level of musicianship and breadth of repertoire.
