Oscar Shorts Poster

The Oscar Shorts offer a vision of what the Academy Awards should and could be but very rarely are: eclectic, cosmopolitan, scrappy and surprising.

  • – A.O. Scott, The New York Times

We will once again showcase the 10 Oscar nominees for Best Short Animation and Live-Action Film at the Buskirk-Chumley Theater. Here’s a chance to see the films that critics are raving about and predict the Oscar-winners before the Academy Awards on February 9th. And don’t forget to vote – ask for a ballot when you enter the theater. If you pick one of the eventual Oscar winners, you’ll win a complimentary ticket to another film and you might also win Dinner for Two at one of our fine local restaurants.

Hollywood movies are often impersonal and risk-free — creative decisions are made by lawyers, accountants, and algorithms. The Oscar Shorts are a celebration of intimate, personal storytelling. Each filmmaker leaves his or her fingerprints on the material.

Information for families: The films are not rated but if they were they would probably be rated PG-13. None of them contain anything that most people would consider objectionable, but several deal with mature subject matter: the death of a parent, China’s one-child policy. Younger children will probably have questions. On the other hand, the films might spark thoughtful conversations around the dinner table.

Doors open 30 minutes before each showing.
