The Pacific Northwest’s premiere alt-classical ensemble turns the evening purple, blending their deep textures with the unique harmonic landscape of the artistic power of Prince – joined by musicians who have worked with Prince personally such as Saeeda Wright and Tyrone Hendrix! Expect a lively evening of diversely-curated music that influenced or was influenced by The Purple One.
Guest artist Saeeda Wright is a powerful, talented vocalist who authors stories through lyrics, melody, and more. She possesses a deep passion for music with roots in gospel and worship, which began in childhood. Saeeda initially brought her talents to Portland Cello Project singing her own songs, and now joins Purple Reign, with her former Prince bandmate, Tyrone Hendrix, elevating the spirit and groove of the PCP Prince repertoire.
Saeeda’s impressive background includes collaborations with Lalah Hathaway, Mike Phillips, Patrick Lamb, Duffy Bishop, and the Pacific Northwest’s own Prince Protegee, Liv Warfield. She has also opened and performed with gospel music power-houses Jessica Reedy, Cece Winans, Crystal Akin, JJ Harrison, and Yvette Williams of the Kurt Carr Singers. She is well-known and respected for her work as a soloist with the Oregon Symphony and has been a regular participant in Portland’s Annual Blues Festival, as well as many other festivals and events.
Tyrone Hendrix is a highly sought after, multi-faceted drummer. He was brought up surrounded by the rich Oakland musical influences of the Hawkins Family, Sheila E, and Tony, Toni, Tone. In 2004 Tyrone relocated to Portland, Oregon, where he expanded his repertoire, adding elements of hip-hop, jazz, funk, soul, and Americana. Tyrone joined Portland Cello Project in 2017, bringing his strong work-ethic and dedication—bridging worlds of improvisational music with Cello Project’s complex arrangements. He delights audiences with his whimsical drum solos, and his singing of Radiohead’s “No Surprises” from behind the drumkit. Prior to his time in Portland, he played alongside music giants such as the incomparable Stevie Wonder, Prince, and many others. In addition to PCP, Tyrone currently plays with Alan Stone, Mike Phillips, and the Liv Warfield Experience.
Purple Reign was Tyrone’s brainchild—an homage to Prince in all his glory: extravagance, intensity, and fun.
Crafted through the wildly innovative arrangements that have made the Portland Cello Project a perennial favorite all over the world, PCP performs Bach to Beck alongside classic Prince tributes, all without missing a beat.
